The SDLD-05A is a Time-of-Flight (TOF) 2D laser radar designed for obstacle-avoidance and area detection on indoor/outdoor mobile equipment. Per the manufacturer's own documentation, its typical application cases are Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) and Rail Guided Vehicles (RGV). It is built for AGV/AMR integrators, machine builders, and industrial automation OEMs who need a single sensor to detect obstacles across a 270° field of view and switch between multiple pre-configured detection zones as the vehicle changes direction or speed.

The sensor delivers 270° single-unit coverage with a 0.1-14m detection range (at 90% target reflectivity; 0.1-8m at 10% reflectivity), ±30mm measurement accuracy, and ≤20mm repeatability at 0.5° angular resolution. Zones are drawn/edited on screen with the configuration software, saved and re-opened as .ini configuration files, downloaded to the sensor, and verified live via point-cloud display in either Edit mode or Monitor mode, which auto-switches to the active zone as the vehicle moves through different zone groups.

Beyond the datasheet's 50ms response time, the configuration software offers an adjustable hold time and response time (each default 200ms) that filter how long an obstacle must be present or absent before the I/O output changes state, plus an object-size filter (default: point clusters smaller than 5 points are ignored) to exclude small-object interference.

How to Select

  1. The 14m maximum range is rated at 90% target reflectivity; low-reflectivity or dark-colored targets (10% reflectivity) reduce usable range to about 8m, so estimate detection distance against your actual target's reflectivity rather than the 14m upper figure.
  2. Choose the Ethernet (UDP) interface for bus-style status reads and visual configuration, and the NPN digital outputs (OUT1-3, active low, load capacity <10mA) for hard-wired interlock into slow-down/stop actions; the two integration paths can be used together.
  3. For a single fixed protection area, use a rectangle or fan zone; for irregular obstacle environments (such as a rack corner), edit a polygon point by point (up to 15 vertices); for zones that must change with vehicle state, switch between 16 preset zone groups using the 4-bit input code (IN1-IN4).
  4. The sensor's light spot is cone-shaped and diverges with distance; mount at a height of at least 200mm above the floor. If mounted lower than 200mm, tilt the sensor upward 1-3°; where multiple units cross-scan, use a tilt of at least 3° or offset the mounting height by at least 40mm to prevent mutual interference.
  5. Power is DC 9-36V (typical 12V) with overall consumption of ≤2.5W, so the sensor can typically run directly off an existing AGV low-voltage circuit without an additional step-down module at the typical 12V supply level.

When NOT to specify the SDLD-05A — and what to use instead

Using the SDLD-05A as a safety-rated protective device because of its 'S' prefix or its AGV framing

Why not: The model name is suggestive, but no Type (IEC 61496), SIL (IEC 61508) or Category/PL (ISO 13849) rating is documented anywhere in our material, and its outputs are ordinary NPN digital I/O with an output load capacity under 10 mA — not OSSDs. Nothing about this device is safety-rated.

Use instead: The DAIDISIKE ST27 Series Safety Laser Scanner — Type 3 / SIL 2 / Cat. 3 PL d, true OSSD outputs, 3 m or 5 m protective field at 1.8% remission.

Mounting outdoors, in a washdown area, or anywhere it could be hosed down

Why not: The SDLD-05A is rated IP54 — dust-protected and splash-resistant only. That is weaker than the IP65 carried by the DLD05A3 and DLD20A5 in the same lineup, and it is not rated for direct water jets.

Use instead: For washdown or heavy-moisture areas use an IP65 or IP67 sensor, or fit the SDLD-05A in a protective enclosure and re-verify the resulting rating at the mounting point.

Sizing the maximum detection distance off the headline 14 m figure for dark or matte targets

Why not: Range is explicitly tied to target reflectivity: 0.1-14 m at 90% reflectivity, falling to 0.1-8 m at 10% reflectivity. Dark clothing, black rubber wheels and matte totes nearly halve the usable range.

Use instead: Design zone boundaries against the 8 m @10% figure for dark or unknown targets, not the 14 m @90% headline number.

A control panel that needs PNP (sourcing) digital outputs

Why not: The SDLD-05A's digital I/O is NPN only, on both the 4 inputs and the 3 zone-mapped outputs. No PNP variant is offered for this model.

Use instead: Verify panel input polarity before ordering. If PNP is required, DLD05A3-3P or DLD20A5-5P provide PNP outputs — though neither has the SDLD-05A's Ethernet interface.

Assuming the system reacts within the 50 ms datasheet figure at default settings

Why not: 50 ms is the hardware response time only. The configuration software separately applies an adjustable hold time and response-time filter, each defaulting to 200 ms, to suppress nuisance triggers. At default settings actual output latency is well beyond 50 ms.

Use instead: Review and where appropriate reduce the software hold-time and response-time filters, balancing against nuisance triggers, and validate real end-to-end latency in the field rather than quoting the 50 ms hardware figure as system response.

Relying on it to flag very small or thin objects at its standard 0.5 degree angular resolution

Why not: 0.5 degrees is coarser than the 0.1 degree option on the DLD05A3 and DLD20A5 in the same lineup, so scan points are more widely spaced at any given range and a slim object is more likely to fall between them.

Use instead: For fine small-object detection use DLD05A3 (5 m) or DLD20A5 (20 m), which offer a selectable 0.1 degree mode.

Specifications we do not publish yet

We only publish a figure once we are confident it is true. The items below are still being validated through further testing and real-world customer feedback, so for now we would rather leave them open than guess. If one of them matters to your design, ask us for the latest validated status.

  • Configuration software: we supply it with the sensor — request it from us rather than downloading it from a third-party site. Its licence terms are not yet published.
  • Physical length of the 14-core lead cable. The manual documents the conductor color and function assignment (VCC, GND, IN1-4, OUT1-4) but not a length.
  • Full Ethernet / UDP data protocol specification (packet and byte layout) for third-party PLC or SCADA integration. Only 'RJ45 connector, UDP protocol, configurable IP address' is documented.
  • Whether the configuration software is provided free of charge or under licence.
  • Guidance on false-trigger risk from highly reflective or mirror-like surfaces, beyond the 90% / 10% reflectivity range figures.
  • MTBF or rated service life.
  • Warranty period.
