Technical Specifications

Output typeAnalog current 4-20 mA (order code I), or analog voltage (order code U — labeled 1-10 V in the model-code key, 0-10 V in the general spec-table column header, and 1-5 V in the five-core wiring diagram; exact range unconfirmed), five-core cable. RS-485 (code R) or RS-232 (code S) serial, seven-core cable. Optional auxiliary NPN/PNP switch output can be added to any configuration.
Communication protocolRS-485/RS-232, based on a customized Modbus RTU protocol. Two selectable frame modes: Mode 1 uploads the full beam-status bitmap; Mode 2 uploads only the highest blocked point, lowest blocked point and total blocked-beam count. Frame: 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, 16-bit CRC (high/low byte).
Baud rate4800 bps (code E) / 9600 bps (code F, default) / 19200 bps (code M) / 38400 bps (code N); O = user-defined
Transmission modeActive (code 1): auto-uploads a data frame every 100 ms by default (interval adjustable). Passive (code 2): multiple curtains can be wired in parallel on the same bus; host must poll before data is uploaded; address code is user-settable.

AccessoriesStandard: DQLMR-06 right-angle end-mount bracket (two-end mounting), DQCA-02 T-slot screws. Optional: DQCA-01 stainless-steel tube bracket, DQCA-03 raised/male nut, DQCA-05 side right-angle bracket (side-face mounting)

Overview

DQL is a through-beam measuring light curtain (not a safety device) built from a row of infrared beams. Instead of a simple on/off signal, it reports continuous measurement data — either as an analog voltage/current proportional to the blocked height, or as digital data over RS-485/RS-232 (Modbus RTU) including the total number of blocked beams, the position of the first and last blocked beam, and the full beam-status bitmap. It is intended for machine builders and system integrators who need to measure object height, width, edge position, or profile in-line — for example on packaging lines, coil/strip processing lines, or material handling systems — and who want a direct interface to either a legacy analog PLC input or a modern fieldbus/PC system.

The DQL series combines an analog output — 4-20 mA current is consistent throughout the catalog, while the voltage output is labeled 1-10 V in the model-code key, 0-10 V in the general spec-table header, and 1-5 V in the five-core wiring diagram (exact range to be confirmed with the factory) — with RS-485/RS-232 serial communication using a customized Modbus RTU protocol (seven-core cable), across seven beam-spacing options from 1.25 mm to 80 mm. Beam count reaches up to 496 per unit, with protection heights from 60 mm to 3,990 mm; detection accuracy is set directly by the selected beam spacing, down to 1.25 mm at the finest option.

Features & Benefits

Dual interface: analog and Modbus RTU serial

Connects directly to legacy analog PLC inputs (4-20 mA current, or a voltage output — labeled 1-10V/0-10V/1-5V inconsistently across the catalog, five-core cable) or to modern fieldbus/PC systems via RS-485/RS-232 (seven-core cable), avoiding the need for separate hardware on retrofit vs. new-build lines.

Modbus RTU beam data: size, edges, profile

The serial interface is selectable between two frame modes: one uploads the full beam-status bitmap (cross-sectional profile); the other uploads only the highest and lowest blocked-beam position (edge location) plus the total blocked-beam count (object size) — covering sizing, edge detection and profiling from a single device.

1.25 mm fine beam spacing for small-part resolution

The finest beam-spacing option is 1.25 mm (model DQL64/1.25-78.75 and up), with detection accuracy set directly by the chosen beam spacing, suited to small or thin targets that coarser-pitch light curtains cannot resolve.

Seven beam-spacing options, heights up to 3,990 mm

Beam spacing is selectable at 1.25 / 2.5 / 5 / 10 / 20 / 40 / 80 mm, with up to 496 beams per unit and measuring field heights from 60 mm to 3,990 mm, so both fine-part gauging and large pallet/parcel dimensioning are covered without changing product family, wiring or protocol.

Selectable active or passive transmission mode

The serial interface can be configured to actively push a data frame whenever the beam state changes (reducing bus load and latency) or to respond only when polled by the host, matching either event-driven or master-polled control architectures.

IP65 standard, optional IP68 waterproof enclosure (DQLF)

The standard unit is rated IP65; an IP68 waterproof-enclosure variant (model prefix DQLF) is available for wash-down or wet environments, and an auxiliary NPN/PNP switch output can be added to either variant.

Standard end-mount bracket, optional side-mount bracket

Supplied as standard with the DQLMR-06 end-mount bracket for two-end installation; an optional DQCA-05 side-mount bracket is available for installations without end-mounting space.

Applications

On-the-fly object height and width measurementContinuous analog or serial output tracks the blocked beam range in real time as objects pass through the curtain, giving a running dimension value rather than a single trigger point.
Parcel and pallet dimensioning / profilingWide beam-spacing options up to 80 mm and measuring heights up to 3,990 mm suit large objects, while the Modbus beam bitmap can capture a coarse cross-sectional profile.
Web/strip edge position detection and guidingFirst/Last Beam Blocked data from the Modbus interface directly reports the edge position of a moving web or strip for guiding control loops.
Coil diameter / loop height monitoringThe continuous analog or beam-count output tracks a changing loop or coil height, which is the standard input signal for loop/tension control.
Small-part and thin-target sizingThe 1.25 mm beam-spacing option resolves fine parts that standard 10-20 mm pitch light curtains cannot distinguish.
Stack height and overhang detectionA tall-format unit (measuring heights to nearly 4 m) can monitor whether stacked material exceeds a set height threshold.
Hole or gap sizing on moving materialThe beam bitmap identifies which beams remain unblocked within an otherwise blocked field, indicating a hole or missing-material gap.
Retrofit of analog PLC-based measuring stationsThe analog voltage or 4-20 mA current output plugs directly into existing analog input modules with no new fieldbus hardware required.
New-build lines with fieldbus/PC-based controlRS-485 Modbus RTU delivers full measurement data (size, edges, profile) to a PLC or PC without extra signal conditioning.

193 standard models at 1.25 mm pitch · 682 across the series. Protective height is derived as H = (N − 1) × K. Intermediate beam counts can usually be built to order — send the opening height you need to cover.

IP68 waterproof enclosure variant

DQLF prefix applied to any model above (e.g. DQLF08/10-70)
F suffix/prefix denotes the IP68 waterproof-enclosure version; default (no F) is IP65.

How to read the DQL/DQM model code

D Q L(M) [F] [beams] / [pitch] - [height] [output] [signal] [baud] [mode] [upload] [interval] [distance]
DQL = analog/RS-485 output selected; DQM = switching output selected (same physical platform — per the catalog: choosing switching output gives DQM, choosing analog voltage/current or RS485 output gives DQL). F (optional) = IP68 waterproof enclosure; default blank = IP65. [beams] = beam count, 2-digit (04, 06, 08 ... 496). [pitch] after "/" = 1.25/2.5/5/10/20/40/80mm. [height] after "-" = protected height in mm. [output] (switching models) = A (NPN NC), B (PNP NC), C (NPN NO), D (PNP NO); blank = no switch output. [signal] = R (RS485), S (RS232), U (voltage output — labeled 1-10V in this key, though other catalog pages show 0-10V/1-5V, unconfirmed), I (4-20mA current). [baud] = E(4800bps)/F(9600bps, default)/M(19200bps)/N(38400bps)/O(user-defined). [mode] (transmission) = 1 (active/auto-push) or 2 (passive/polled). [upload] = 1 (full beam-status bitmap) or 2 (highest/lowest blocked point + total blocked count). [interval] = interval time, blank unless specified. [distance] = A (0.3-3m) or B (0.3-6m). Catalog example: QL08/40-280ARF21 = 8 beams, 40mm pitch, 280mm protected height, NPN normally-closed RS485 output, 9600bps, passive transmission, full-status upload, 3m sensing distance.

How to Select

  1. Choose beam spacing by target size: finer targets need finer spacing — 1.25 mm for small/thin parts, 10-20 mm for general industrial measurement, 40-80 mm for large objects (pallets, parcels) where cost and coverage height matter more than fine resolution.
  2. Choose model by protection height / beam count: within each spacing group, the model list runs from the shortest to the longest configuration (e.g. 10 mm spacing: DQL08/10-70 to DQL400/10-3990) — select the model whose coverage range most closely matches the maximum height of the object being measured.
  3. Choose signal type by output requirement: for legacy PLCs with only analog inputs, choose U (voltage output — labeled 1-10V/0-10V/1-5V inconsistently across the catalog, confirm with factory) or I (4-20mA) analog output; to read blocked beam count, edge position, or the bitmap profile, choose R (RS-485) or S (RS-232) serial output; for a simple presence/absence signal only, the DQM switch-output series applies instead, outside this series.
  4. Choose baud rate for serial output: 4800(E)/9600(F)/19200(M)/38400(N) bps, matching the host/PLC communication settings.
  5. Choose transmission mode: active mode (1, automatic report on state change) suits bus-load-sensitive, low-latency applications; passive mode (2) suits host systems that need to control the polling cadence.
  6. Choose enclosure rating: standard IP65 for general indoor environments; the IP68 waterproof-enclosure version (model prefix DQLF) for wet, wash-down, or outdoor environments.
  7. Choose the detection-distance order code: A (0.3-3m) / B (6m) / C (10m) corresponds to the usable working distance between the transmitter and receiver — select per the actual installation span.
  8. Mounting: the DQLMR-06 end-mount bracket is supplied as standard for two-end installation; select the optional DQCA-05 bracket if only side mounting is possible.

📘 Need the full method? How to Choose a Safety Light Curtain

When NOT to specify the DQL — and what to use instead

You need to protect a person from a hazardous machine motion

Why not: DQL is a measuring/detection light curtain. Its own feature page in the catalog does carry the header “安全光幕” (safety light curtain) and a bullet citing IEC 61496 and TÜV/UL certification, but no Category, PFHd/MTTFd or Type-4 architecture data is published anywhere for this series, and every worked application example shown for DQL/DQM (carton dimensioning, tire sorting, wood-diameter gauging, small-part counting, web-edge detection) is a measuring or counting task, never personnel guarding.

Use instead: A DAIDISIKE safety light curtain series actually designed and documented for personnel protection — DQC, DQA or DQT4 — paired with a DA31 or DQSRN safety relay module, or an ST27 safety component, as the application requires.

Need a simple presence/absence signal, not measurement data

Why not: DQL's interface is analog (voltage/current) or RS-485/RS-232 serial — more wiring and configuration than a pure on/off application needs.

Use instead: The DQM series, the switching-output counterpart built on the same platform and mounting accessories.

Detecting an object smaller than the selected beam spacing

Why not: Resolution is limited to the chosen beam spacing; an object narrower than the pitch can pass between two beams undetected.

Use instead: Step down to the next finer beam-spacing tier (to 1.25 mm), or confirm with the factory if sub-1.25 mm resolution is required.

Transmitter-receiver span beyond the standard 0.3-3 m / 0.3-6 m order codes

Why not: The published model-code table only defines codes A (0.3-3 m) and B (0.3-6 m); longer spans are noted only as a special-order possibility, not a standard catalog option.

Use instead: Confirm an extended-range special order with the factory before specifying beyond 6 m.

Washdown, high-pressure spray, or continuously wet installation

Why not: The default enclosure is IP65 (dust-tight, protected only against low-pressure water); only the DQLF variant is rated IP68.

Use instead: Order the DQLF IP68 waterproof variant for wet measuring applications, or the DQR waterproof safety light curtain series if the task is actually personnel guarding in a wet area.

Application requires a confirmed operating-temperature or humidity rating

Why not: Pages 44-47 of the catalog (the product-specific pages for DQL/DQM) do not publish an operating-temperature or humidity figure for this series.

Use instead: Confirm the operating environment range with the factory before specifying for hot, cold, or humid installations.

Specifications we do not publish yet

We only publish a figure once we are confident it is true. The items below are still being validated through further testing and real-world customer feedback, so for now we would rather leave them open than guess. If one of them matters to your design, ask us for the latest validated status.

  • The analog voltage output is labeled inconsistently across the catalog: 1-10V in the model-code order-key (p.45), 0-10V in the general spec-table column header (p.45), and 1-5V in the five-core wiring diagram (p.46). The exact voltage range needs confirming.
  • No machine-safety rating (Type / Category / PL / PFHd) is published for DQL and we do not claim one. Treat DQL as a measuring light curtain, not a protective device — for safeguarding people use a safety light curtain such as DQC, DQA or DQT4
  • Response time for DQL specifically is not clearly published: the general DQL/DQM feature page cites both “up to 5ms” and “<=15ms” in the same bullet, and a separate 0.5ms figure on p.47 is stated specifically for DQM. The DQL-specific response time needs confirming.
  • Extended sensing distances beyond the standard 0.3-3m/0.3-6m order codes — the catalog notes some spacings “can reportedly be made up to 30m” subject to customer-service confirmation — need exact figures per beam spacing confirmed.
  • Overall housing cross-section dimensions are not given directly for DQL in these catalog pages; the only figure quoted (36 x 36mm) is tied to an optional M12 aviation-connector option, not confirmed as the general housing cross-section.
  • Whether any TUV/UL certificate covers a DQL configuration, and its number and scope
  • Operating temperature and humidity range for DQL is not stated on pages 44-47 of the catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the DQL and DQM light curtain series?
Per the manufacturer's catalog, choosing analog voltage/current output selects the DQL series, while choosing switch (on/off) output selects the DQM series. DQL outputs continuous measurement data (beam count, position, bitmap); DQM outputs a simple ON when any beam is blocked. Choose DQL to measure dimensions, DQM to detect presence/absence only.
Can the DQL measuring light curtain be used for personnel safety protection?
No. The DQL is a measuring/detection light curtain, not a safety light curtain, and is not designed or rated for personnel protection applications.
What data can be read over the RS-485 interface?
Over RS-485 with Modbus RTU protocol, the DQL can report the total number of blocked beams, the position of the first blocked beam, the position of the last blocked beam, and the full beam-status bitmap.
What is the finest beam spacing available, and what resolution does it give?
The finest beam spacing is 1.25 mm (e.g. model DQL64/1.25-78.75); detection accuracy is set directly by the selected beam spacing rather than a separately published accuracy figure.
What analog output signals does the DQL support?
The DQL supports 4-20 mA analog current output, and a voltage output that the catalog labels inconsistently as 1-10V (model-code key), 0-10V (general spec table) or 1-5V (wiring diagram) — confirm the exact range with the factory — wired via a five-core connection.
What baud rates are supported on the serial interface?
The order code supports four baud rate options: 4800, 9600, 19200 and 38400 bps.
What is the difference between active and passive transmission mode?
Active mode automatically pushes a data frame when the beam state changes; passive mode responds only when polled by the host system. The mode is selectable at order time.
What is the maximum measuring height and beam count available in the DQL series?
Within the published model list, the tallest standard configuration is DQL400/10-3990 (10 mm spacing, 3,990 mm protection height), and the maximum beam count listed is 496 beams (at 2.5 mm and 5 mm spacing).
Is a waterproof version available?
Yes. The standard enclosure is rated IP65; an IP68 waterproof-enclosure variant is available under the DQLF model prefix.
Can the DQL output both analog and switch signals at the same time?
Yes, per the order code structure, an auxiliary NPN/PNP switch output can be added to a unit configured with analog or serial output.
Can you provide certification documents for the DQL light curtain?
DQL is a measuring/detection light curtain, not a certified safety device. The catalog's DQL/DQM feature page does cite IEC 61496 and TUV/UL certification, but this appears to be boilerplate carried over from the safety-curtain product line: no Category, PFHd/MTTFd or Type-4 architecture data is published for DQL anywhere in the catalog, and every worked application example is a measuring or counting task. We are confirming with the factory whether any certification genuinely applies to DQL before citing one.
