Overview

The JB-PSE series is a pressure-sensitive safety edge (also called a safety contact edge, per ISO 13856-2 terminology) — a rubber-profile strip that senses direct pressure or impact and outputs a stop signal to a safety controller. It is designed to be mounted on the leading or closing edge of a moving part (a door, gate, AGV/AMR chassis, or machine slide) so that contact with a person or obstacle is detected before — or as — a crushing or shearing hazard develops.

It is intended for machine builders, door/gate integrators, and AGV/AMR manufacturers who need to protect a specific moving edge and who require documented functional-safety data (PFH, MTTFd, B10d, Category) for their machine risk assessment. The series spans seven cross-section profiles (JB-PSE-108/110/215/230/245/345/360) on 15/25/35 mm mounting rails, with a 13 ms response time and a mechanical life of more than 3,000,000 operations.

Features & Benefits

Complete functional safety data for risk assessment

The catalog lists PFH 6.99×10⁻¹⁰ /h (referenced against IEC 61508, SIL 3), Category 3 architecture (EN ISO 13849-1), MTTFd greater than 30 years, B10d of 3×10⁷, and Nop of 52,560 operations/year. The edge supports the EN 1760-1 reset command and forms a safety system with DQRSN-SR / DQRSN-SRA safety controllers, designed in accordance with EN 1760-1, IEC 61508, EN 62061, EN ISO 13849-1, and EN 60204-1.

13 ms response with less than 2 mm actuating travel

The stop signal is issued almost the instant a person touches the edge. Actuating travel is less than 2 mm on the 108/110 profiles, less than 3 mm on 215/230/245, and less than 5 mm on 345/360.

Overtravel absorbs the machine's braking distance

After the stop signal is triggered, the edge continues to compress — up to less than 45 mm of overtravel on the JB-PSE-360 — giving the machine's braking system extra distance to stop before full compression is reached.

Seven profiles on 15/25/35 mm mounting rails

One series scales from compact AGV bumpers (JB-PSE-108/110) to heavy-duty industrial door edges (JB-PSE-345/360), with actuating force ranging from approximately 25 N to 250 N depending on profile size and application.

Conformable design for curved and irregular contours

The edge follows curved or irregular contours instead of requiring multiple straight sections to be spliced together. Any length from 30 cm to 300 cm is made to order.

IP65-rated for indoor and outdoor installation

Rated IP65 with an operating temperature range of -20 °C to +55 °C and humidity up to 95% (condensing at 23 °C). Sheath material is EPDM (215-360) or TPE (108/110), with oil- and acid/alkali-resistant compounds available on request.

Mechanical life of more than 3,000,000 operations

Matched by an MTTFd of more than 30 years, the JB-PSE series is engineered for high-cycle door and AGV duty rather than as a wear item.

Terminating resistor for continuously monitored circuits

The 2-wire R-type version includes an integrated terminating resistor (1.2 kΩ or 8.2 kΩ) for safety controllers that continuously monitor the circuit. 2-wire or 4-wire K-type versions without a resistor are available for controllers that don't require line monitoring. Standard cable is TPE-sheathed VVR φ4mm 2×0.35mm², 2 m long.

Actuating angle of up to 90°

The edge responds to oblique and glancing impacts, not only head-on pressure.

Applications

AGV / AMR Bumper (Collision Protection)Compact JB-PSE-108/110 profiles suit small AGV/AMR bumpers, while JB-PSE-345/360 suit large AGV collision protection. Conformable mounting follows rounded AGV chassis corners, and the 13 ms response plus overtravel give the AGV's braking system extra reaction distance.
Closing Edge Protection for Powered Doors and GatesThe profile range covers light to heavy door bodies, with a fast response and small actuating travel suited to faster-moving door applications.
Heavy-Duty Industrial DoorsJB-PSE-345/360 combine larger cross-sections, a higher actuating-force range, and greater overtravel (up to less than 45 mm) to match the longer braking distance of heavy door bodies.
Crushing and Shearing Point Protection on Moving Machine PartsMounted on moving worktables, lifting platforms, and similar machine parts to detect crushing or shearing hazards as they develop.
Outdoor Door/Gate InstallationsThe IP65 ingress protection rating and -20 °C to +55 °C operating range support outdoor installation on doors and gates exposed to weather.
Oil-Mist or Acid/Alkali-Exposed Industrial EnvironmentsOil- and acid/alkali-resistant sheath compounds are available on request for washdown areas and chemical-plant edges and equipment.

When NOT to specify the JB-PSE — and what to use instead

Needing to detect a person or object before contact, at a distance from the hazard

Why not: JB-PSE is a contact device — it only trips once it is physically touched and compressed (actuating travel under 2-5 mm depending on profile); it provides no presence sensing at a distance.

Use instead: A light curtain (DQC/DQA/DQT/DQT4) or ST27 laser scanner for area/perimeter presence sensing

Guarding a floor area rather than a single moving edge

Why not: JB-PSE is a linear profile mounted along one moving edge (30-300 cm lengths); it is not a floor-coverage device.

Use instead: JT14 safety mat

The application needs a higher architecture than Category 3 (e.g. a Category 4/PLe requirement)

Why not: JB-PSE's published architecture is Category 3 per EN ISO 13849-1, referenced against SIL 3 (IEC 61508) at the component level; this is not the same as a Category 4/PLe rating.

Use instead: Consult the factory on system-level architecture; pairing with a Cat.4/PLe relay such as DA31 or DQSRN raises the relay's own rating, not the edge's own Category

A resistance-terminated edge with documented PFH/MTTFd/B10d data is required but the plain economy JB line is being considered instead

Why not: JB-PSE and JB are different tiers in the same catalog — JB-PSE carries published PFH/Category/MTTFd/B10d functional-safety data, while the plain JB series does not.

Use instead: JB-PSE (this series) when documented functional-safety figures are required for the risk assessment

The edge will be paired with a safety relay other than DQSRN-SR/SRA and the documented PFH/MTTFd/B10d figures must still apply unchanged

Why not: The catalog's PFH, MTTFd, and B10d figures are stated specifically for the edge used with a DQRSN-SR(A) safety controller.

Use instead: Pair with DQSRN, or confirm an equivalent relay's compatibility and resulting figures with the factory

Specifications we do not publish yet

We only publish a figure once we are confident it is true. The items below are still being validated through further testing and real-world customer feedback, so for now we would rather leave them open than guess. If one of them matters to your design, ask us for the latest validated status.

  • Exact actuating force value for each individual profile (108/110/215/230/245/345/360) — only an overall range (>=25N to 250N) is published
  • Minimum bending radius for conformable/curved mounting (published for the JB economy line but not confirmed for JB-PSE)
  • Supply voltage/current rating for the signal loop itself (terminating resistor values are documented, but loop voltage/current are not specified)
  • Certificate numbers and issuing body for the stated SIL 3 (IEC 61508) and Category 3 (EN ISO 13849-1) figures
  • Confirmation of whether the published PFH/MTTFd/B10d figures still apply when paired with a relay other than DQSRN-SR/SRA
  • Sheath color/marking convention

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the response time of the JB-PSE safety edge?
The response time is 13 ms, meaning the stop signal is issued 13 ms after the edge is actuated.
What is "overtravel" and why does it matter?
Overtravel is the additional distance the safety edge can still be compressed after the stop signal has already been triggered (defined per ISO 13856-2 as the difference between working travel and actuating travel). It gives the machine's braking system extra distance to bring the moving part to a stop. JB-PSE overtravel ranges up to less than 45 mm on the JB-PSE-360 profile.
Does the JB-PSE series have functional safety certification data?
Certification documents are available on request.
Can the JB-PSE safety edge be mounted on a curved surface?
Yes. The edge is designed for conformable mounting and can follow curved or irregular contours, which is useful for rounded AGV chassis corners or curved door edges. Lengths from 30 cm to 300 cm are made to order.
What is the difference between the R-type and K-type wiring?
The R-type is a 2-wire version with an integrated terminating resistor (1.2 kΩ or 8.2 kΩ) that allows a safety controller to continuously monitor the circuit for open- or short-circuit faults. The K-type (2-wire or 4-wire) does not include a resistor, for controllers that do not require line monitoring.
What cross-section sizes are available, and which mounting rail do they use?
Seven profiles are available (JB-PSE-108/110/215/230/245/345/360). JB-PSE-110 uses a 15 mm C-type rail; JB-PSE-215/230/245 use a 25 mm CS/C/CL-type rail; JB-PSE-345/360 use a 35 mm C/CL-type rail.
Is the JB-PSE safety edge suitable for outdoor use?
It carries an IP65 ingress protection rating and an operating temperature range of -20 °C to +55 °C, and is suitable for indoor or outdoor installation.
What is the actuating angle — does the edge only respond to head-on pressure?
No. The actuating angle is up to 90°, meaning the edge also responds to oblique or glancing impacts, not only direct perpendicular pressure.
How does a pressure-sensitive safety edge differ from a safety light curtain?
A safety edge is a contact-based device mounted directly on the moving part it protects, and it is not affected by dust or oil mist in the air. A safety light curtain is a non-contact device that senses intrusion into a monitored plane before contact occurs. Safety edges are typically chosen when the protected zone is a single moving edge or when the environment has heavy dust/mist that would interfere with optical sensing.
What is the mechanical life of the JB-PSE series?
The mechanical life is more than 3,000,000 operations, paired with an MTTFd of more than 30 years and a rated operating rate (Nop) of 52,560 operations per year.
