Overview

The DK-D461/DK-D561 is a distance-settable (background-suppression) reflective photoelectric sensor with a strip-shaped (line-shaped) light beam — 4 mm wide and up to 100 mm long — instead of the round point spot used by conventional photoelectric sensors. It is built for machine builders and integrators who need to detect targets whose exact position along one axis is not fixed: parts on a vibratory feeder track, workpieces swinging on a hanging/overhead conveyor, or components dropping through a chute.

Because the sensing zone is a line rather than a point, the target only has to cross the strip anywhere along its length to be detected. The sensor sets a cutoff distance within 200 mm to suppress background objects, holds repeatability of 1 mm along the sensing axis and 0.2 mm perpendicular to it with hysteresis under 2% of the operating distance, and responds in 1 ms or less at a response frequency of 100 Hz. It operates on DC12-24V, is rated IP65, and is available in NPN or PNP open-collector output.

Features & Benefits

100 mm strip beam catches what a point spot misses

Small, swinging, or position-varying objects — a workpiece wobbling on a hanging line, loose parts sliding through a feeder track, falling parts in a drop chute — often pass beside a conventional round spot and go undetected. Because the DK-D461 stretches the sensing zone into a 100 mm line, any target contacting the strip at any point along its length is detected.

Distance-settable (background-suppression) sensing within 200 mm

Unlike simple diffuse-reflective sensing, the DK-D461 sets a cutoff distance within 200 mm, so machine frames, hoppers, or other background structures beyond that distance do not trigger a false detection.

Precise repeatability, not just detect-or-not

Repeatability of 1 mm along the sensing axis and 0.2 mm perpendicular to it, with hysteresis under 2% of the operating distance, means line coverage does not come at the cost of positioning precision. The sensor is suitable for applications where the edge position of a target must be judged consistently.

Specified ambient light immunity

Rated tolerance to up to 3,000 lx incandescent light and 10,000 lx sunlight at the receiver means the sensor is designed to resist false operation near windows or under strong workshop lighting.

1 ms response for high-speed lines

Operate/reset time of 1 ms or less at a response frequency of 100 Hz supports detection on fast-moving feeders and conveyors.

Wire-selectable output with built-in protection, IP65

The control line can be left open (Light-ON/NO) or connected to 0 V (Dark-ON/NC) to match the control logic; reverse-polarity and output short-circuit protection are built in, and the housing is rated IP65 for washdown or dusty environments. Available in NPN or PNP open-collector output (≤100 mA).

Applications

Vibratory feeder / bowl feeder track detectionSmall parts in vibratory feeder tracks move and vibrate unpredictably; the 100 mm strip beam covers the full track width so parts are caught regardless of their momentary lateral position.
Hanging/overhead conveyor workpiece presence detectionWorkpieces suspended on hanging conveyors swing side to side as they travel; a point sensor can miss a swinging part, while the strip beam spans the swing range.
Drop-chute / falling-part monitoringParts falling through a chute do not follow a fixed trajectory; the line-shaped beam intercepts parts anywhere across the chute opening.
Lateral entry detection of long, thin stock (bar or wire ends)The elongated beam is oriented to detect a bar or wire end entering laterally across a wide capture zone rather than a single narrow point.
Pallet/carrier detection with position toleranceWhere pallets or carriers on a line do not stop at an exact repeatable position, the strip beam still intercepts them within its 100 mm coverage.
Edge-position sensing on moving webs or partsWith 0.2 mm perpendicular repeatability and hysteresis under 2% of the operating distance, the sensor supports consistent edge-position judgment, not only presence/absence detection.

How to Select

  1. Choose DK-D461 for standard distance-settable (background-suppression) reflective sensing within 200 mm with a 4 mm red LED strip beam up to 100 mm long.
  2. Choose DK-D561 for laser-based sensing with a 100 mm adjustable range and a finer 60 x 2 mm light band.
  3. Select DK-D461NPN or DK-D461PNP according to whether your PLC/controller input is NPN (sink) or PNP (source) type.
  4. No separate model is needed for normally-open vs normally-closed operation — set it by wiring: leave the control line open for Light-ON (NO), or connect it to 0 V for Dark-ON (NC).
  5. All variants operate on DC12-24V, compatible with common PLC/relay control cabinet supply voltages.
  6. Refer to the dimension drawings for the DK-D461/DK-D561 strip-beam series for installation dimensions.

📘 Need the full method? NPN vs PNP Sensor Outputs Explained

When NOT to specify the DK-D461 — and what to use instead

Need a small focused spot for tight single-point positioning rather than line coverage

Why not: The sensing zone is deliberately a 4 mm x 100 mm strip - it is built to catch a target anywhere along that line, not to give point-level precision across its own length.

Use instead: a focused-spot background-suppression sensor such as BGS-CX61 or BGS-CX441 (2 mm spot)

Detection distance needs to exceed 200 mm (DK-D461) or 100 mm (DK-D561)

Why not: DK-D461's distance-settable sensing is rated within 200 mm and DK-D561's laser variant is rated to 100 mm adjustable.

Use instead: the BX series long-range background-suppression sensor (up to 4 m) or a through-beam pair

Specifying the green-light DK-D461 variant or the laser DK-D561 for a production order

Why not: These variants are documented on a legacy distributor page only, are not listed in the current catalog, and their production status is unconfirmed.

Use instead: the standard DK-D461 red-LED NPN/PNP models, which are confirmed current catalog items

Washdown with a high-pressure hose, or risk of temporary submersion

Why not: This series is rated IP65 (dust-tight, splash-protected) - not rated for high-pressure jets or submersion.

Use instead: confirm exact IP requirements with us; no higher-IP strip-beam model is currently cataloged

Personnel guarding or any safety-related presence detection

Why not: No safety rating or safety certification is published for this series.

Use instead: a certified safety light curtain (e.g. DQC/DQA series) for personnel protection

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a strip-beam (line-beam) photoelectric sensor and how is it different from a standard photoelectric sensor?
A standard photoelectric sensor emits a small round spot of light, so detection only occurs if the target crosses that exact point. The DK-D461/DK-D561 emits a strip-shaped beam — 4 mm wide and up to 100 mm long — so a target is detected anywhere it crosses along the length of that strip, which is useful when the target's exact position varies.
What is the detection range of the DK-D461?
The DK-D461 uses distance-settable (background-suppression) reflective sensing with a detection distance within 200 mm.
What is the detection range of the DK-D561?
The DK-D561 is a laser variant with a 100 mm adjustable detection range and a finer 60 x 2 mm light band.
Does the sensor output NPN or PNP?
Both are available — DK-D461NPN and DK-D461PNP versions offer NPN or PNP open-collector output rated at 100 mA maximum.
How do I switch between normally-open (Light-ON) and normally-closed (Dark-ON) operation?
This is set by wiring the control line: leaving it open (unconnected) selects Light-ON/normally-open operation; connecting it to 0 V selects Dark-ON/normally-closed operation.
What is the response time and how fast can the sensor operate?
Operate/reset response time is 1 ms or less, at a response frequency of 100 Hz, suitable for fast-moving feeder or conveyor lines.
How well does the sensor resist ambient light interference?
Ambient light immunity is rated at up to 3,000 lx for incandescent light and 10,000 lx for sunlight at the receiver.
What is the ingress protection rating?
The sensor is rated IP65.
What supply voltage does the sensor require?
DC12-24V.
Is a green-light or laser version available?
A 525 nm green-light emitter version and the laser-based DK-D561 (with a 60 x 2 mm light band) are referenced as available variants; buyers should confirm current production status with us before ordering, as these were documented on a distributor website rather than the current catalog.
