Overview
The Q20 is a compact square-body capacitive proximity switch designed for non-contact detection of both metallic and non-metallic materials at a fixed 10 mm sensing range. Unlike inductive sensors that only respond to metal, capacitive sensing detects any target with sufficient dielectric constant, making it suitable for machine builders and panel integrators who need to sense liquids, granular solids, plastics, wood, or glass inside industrial equipment, tanks, or conveying lines.
It is offered in flush (standard) and non-flush ("T" suffix) mounting variants, and in NPN or PNP output with either normally-open (NO) or normally-closed (NC) logic, so it can be matched to common PLC input configurations. Wiring is 3-wire DC, and the model number itself encodes the configuration: sensing distance, output transistor type, contact logic, and mounting style.

How to Select
- Choose output transistor type by PLC input polarity: N = NPN (sinking output, for sinking-type PLC input cards), P = PNP (sourcing output, for sourcing-type PLC input cards).
- Choose contact logic by control logic needs: model number "1" = normally open (NO, output conducts on target detection), model number "2" = normally closed (NC, output opens on target detection).
- Choose mounting style by installation environment: no "T" suffix = flush mount (can be embedded in a metal panel); "T" suffix = non-flush mount, for use where surrounding metal could interfere with a flush-mounted sensor.
- Sensing distance is fixed at 10 mm across all four Q20 models, so selection is determined only by output type, contact logic, and mounting style.

When NOT to specify the Q20 — and what to use instead
Dusty, humid, or condensing locations, or where buildup can form on the sensing face
Why not: Capacitive sensing (the principle this series relies on to detect non-metallic dielectric targets) is inherently sensitive to humidity, dust, and material buildup near the sensing face, which can cause false triggering.
Use instead: An inductive proximity sensor (e.g. the Q25/Q30/Q40 square series or the M8/M12/M18/M30 tubular series) for metal-only targets in dirty or condensing spots.
Needing a sensing distance other than 10mm
Why not: Sensing distance is fixed at 10mm across all four Q20 models, with no graded range option in this series.
Use instead: The RS series (M12/M18/M30 capacitive), which offers multiple sensing-range codes per thread size.
Machine guarding or personnel-safety interlocking
Why not: This is a standard presence-detection switch with no safety rating or safety category listed in its specifications.
Use instead: a dedicated safety interlock switch (e.g. the DX-series safety door switch) or a safety light curtain
