Overview
The Q10 series (Q102.5 / Q104) is a square-body inductive proximity switch that senses metal targets from its side face rather than its front face, making it suitable for installations where a flush front-facing sensor cannot fit. It is a 3-wire DC device used by machine builders and panel integrators who need a small, low-profile metal-detection point on conveyors, indexing tables, or cam/shaft mechanisms.
Q102.5 detects at 2.5mm and Q104 detects at 4mm, both in the same 10mm(W) x 27-30mm(L) footprint, with body thickness of 6mm for Q102.5 (ABS housing) and 6.5mm for Q104 (PBT housing). The switch is available in NPN or PNP output, normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC), operates on 10-30VDC, includes a built-in LED status indicator, and carries an IP67 ingress protection rating with an operating temperature range of -25C to +70C.
Features & Benefits
Side-face sensing for tight installation spaces
The sensing face is on the side of the block, not the tip, so the switch can be mounted where a standard front-sensing barrel proximity switch has no clearance.
Two sensing-distance options in one compact footprint
Q102.5 detects at 2.5mm and Q104 detects at 4mm, both in the same 10mm(W) x 30mm(L) footprint (body thickness 6mm for Q102.5, 6.5mm for Q104), letting engineers pick sensing range without changing mounting geometry.
Flexible output configuration
Available in NPN or PNP, normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC), covering the four most common wiring requirements for PLC and relay-based control panels.
Standard 3-wire DC color-coded cable
Brown (BN) = positive, black (BK) = signal, blue (BU) = negative, matching common industrial wiring conventions for straightforward field installation.
Built-in LED indicator
The switch includes an LED status indicator to show detection state at a glance during commissioning and troubleshooting.
IP67-rated, wide operating temperature range
Rated IP67 ingress protection and rated for -25C to +70C operation, suited to typical factory-floor environments with dust, splash, and moderate temperature swings.
Short-circuit and overload protection
The output includes short-circuit protection with an overload current protection point of 180mA, reducing the risk of sensor damage from wiring faults.
Applications
Models & Ordering Information
Q102.5 (2.5mm sensing distance)
Q104 (4mm sensing distance)
How to Select
- Need 2.5mm sensing distance -> choose Q102.5 series (ABS housing, 6mm thickness).
- Need 4mm sensing distance -> choose Q104 series (PBT housing, 6.5mm thickness).
- Sinking-input PLC / control circuit that pulls current to 0V -> choose N (NPN) output.
- Sourcing-input PLC / control circuit that pulls current to +V -> choose P (PNP) output.
- Output should activate (turn ON) when a metal target is present -> choose 1 (Normally Open, NO).
- Output should activate (turn ON) when no metal target is present, and switch OFF when target arrives -> choose 2 (Normally Closed, NC).
- Combine into a part number using the naming rule: Q10 + sensing distance (2.5/4) + N/P (NPN/PNP) + 1/2 (NO/NC). Example: 2.5mm, NPN, NO -> Q102.5N1; 4mm, PNP, NC -> Q104P2.
- Confirm mounting envelope: body footprint approx. 10mm(W) x 27-30mm(L); Q102.5 = 6mm thick, Q104 = 6.5mm thick - verify clearance in the mounting bracket before ordering.
- Confirm power supply: 10-30VDC, 3-wire connection (BN = +, BK = signal, BU = -).

When NOT to specify the Q10 — and what to use instead
Needing front/tip-facing sensing instead of side sensing
Why not: The Q10 series senses from the side face of the block, not the front tip, per the manufacturer's dimension drawing for this series.
Use instead: A front-sensing round barrel sensor (e.g. an M8/M12 tubular inductive model) or the Q17/Q18C square series, which sense from the front/side face.
Detecting plastic, liquid, or other non-metallic targets
Why not: The Q10 series is inductive, so it only responds to metal targets.
Use instead: A capacitive sensor such as the Q20 square capacitive switch or the RS series.
Switching a load directly above the rated output current
Why not: Maximum load current is rated at 150mA with a 180mA overload protection trip point, per the spec table.
Use instead: Route the load through an interposing relay or contactor rated above 150mA rather than driving it directly from the sensor output.
Needing more than 4mm sensing distance in a similar compact footprint
Why not: Sensing distance in this series is fixed at 2.5mm (Q102.5) or 4mm (Q104); there is no longer-range option in this body style.
Use instead: The Q17/Q18C series (5mm/8mm) or the Q25/Q30/Q40 series (10-20mm) for longer sensing distance.
Sensing aluminum, brass, or copper targets at the rated distance
Why not: No non-ferrous correction factor is published in the current spec table for this series.
Use instead: Confirm the correction factor with the factory before specifying for non-ferrous metal targets.
