Overview

This is a cylindrical M8-threaded capacitive proximity switch with a nickel-plated brass metal housing and a 2m PVC cable. Unlike inductive proximity switches, which only sense metal, capacitive sensing detects any material with a dielectric constant different from air, making it suitable for level sensing in tanks and hoppers, non-metallic part detection on a line, or sensing through a thin non-metallic container wall. It is intended for machine builders, packaging/filling line integrators, and material-handling OEMs who need a small-diameter (M8), short-range detection point for metal or non-metal targets.

The sensor detects at 1mm sensing distance in flush mounting or 2mm in non-flush ("T" suffix) mounting, in a compact M8x45mm IP67-rated metal body. It operates on 10-30VDC with NPN or PNP output in normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) logic, has a 1.5ms response time and 100Hz switching frequency, and includes built-in short-circuit protection plus an overload current protection point of 280mA and an LED status indicator.

Features & Benefits

Detects non-metallic materials, not just metal

Capacitive sensing principle responds to liquids, powders, granules, wood, glass, and plastics, extending detection beyond what inductive sensors can do.

Two mounting options for different installation needs

Flush mounting (1mm sensing distance) embeds level with a metal surface; non-flush mounting with a "T" suffix (2mm sensing distance) gives a longer, unobstructed detection field.

Compact M8x45mm metal body with nickel-plated brass housing

Small enough for tight installation points while keeping a durable metal enclosure.

IP67 protection rated for washdown and dusty environments

Sealed against dust ingress and temporary immersion, suitable for food/packaging and material-handling environments.

Flexible output configuration: NPN/PNP, NO/NC, 3-wire DC

Eight part numbers cover 2 transistor types x 2 mounting types x 2 switching logic combinations for direct compatibility with common PLC input cards.

Fast response for line-speed detection

1.5ms response time and 100Hz switching frequency support relatively fast-moving targets.

Built-in short-circuit and overload protection

A rated overload current protection point at 280mA and confirmed short-circuit protection reduce nuisance failures from wiring faults.

LED status indicator for on-site diagnostics

A built-in LED lets technicians visually confirm switching state during commissioning and troubleshooting without a meter.

Applications

Liquid level detection through a tank/hopper wallCapacitive sensing can detect liquid level changes through a non-metallic tank or hopper wall, providing a level-sensing point without direct media contact.
Powder or granule level/presence sensing in hoppersThe capacitive sensing principle responds to non-metallic powder and granule media, making it suitable for material-handling and dosing/batching systems.
Non-metallic part detection on assembly/packaging linesDetects non-metallic parts such as plastic, glass, or wood components on a line, extending detection beyond what an inductive proximity switch can sense.
Detecting objects through thin non-metallic packaging or containersThe non-flush mounting version (2mm sensing distance) is suited to sensing through thin plastic or glass container walls.
Compact-space position/end-of-travel sensing in machine buildsThe M8x45mm compact metal body fits into tight installation points for position or end-of-travel sensing in machine builds.
Washdown or dusty industrial environmentsIP67 protection supports dust ingress protection and temporary immersion, suiting washdown or dusty industrial environments.
PLC-integrated detection points requiring NPN or PNP logic matchingNPN and PNP transistor output variants allow direct matching to common PLC input card types without additional interfacing.

Models & Ordering Information

M8 Series – Flush Mount (1mm sensing distance)

R0801N1R0801P1R0801N2R0801P2
Flush mounting, no "T" suffix, 1mm sensing distance.

M8 Series – Non-Flush Mount (2mm sensing distance)

R0802N1TR0802P1TR0802N2TR0802P2T
Non-flush mounting, "T" suffix, 2mm sensing distance.

How to Select

  1. Choose flush mounting (no "T" suffix, e.g. R0801N1) to embed level with a metal surface at 1mm sensing distance, or non-flush mounting ("T" suffix, e.g. R0802N1T) for a longer 2mm sensing distance with clearance around the sensing face.
  2. Match transistor output type to your PLC input card: NPN (sinking) or PNP (sourcing).
  3. Choose NO (normally open, output conducts on detection) or NC (normally closed, output opens on detection) switching logic.
  4. Wiring is 3-wire DC: brown (+), blue (-), black (signal output).
  5. Confirm the supply voltage (10-30VDC) and load current (max 150mA) match your application before selecting a part number.

When NOT to specify the M8 — and what to use instead

Detecting metal only, where sensitivity to nearby humidity, dust, or condensation is undesirable

Why not: Capacitive sensing responds to any material with a dielectric constant different from air, and no humidity/dust immunity spec is published for this series.

Use instead: The M8 inductive proximity sensor series, which senses metal only.

Sensing distances beyond 2mm

Why not: The maximum sensing distance in this series is 2mm (non-flush); this is a short-range family.

Use instead: The M12/M18/M30 metal-housing capacitive proximity sensor series, which reaches up to 30mm depending on model.

On-site fine-tuning of the trip point after installation

Why not: This M8 series has a fixed sensing distance per mounting type (1mm flush / 2mm non-flush) rather than a field-adjustable range.

Use instead: The M12 variant of the M8/M12 capacitive proximity switch with connector series, which offers a potentiometer-adjustable 1-6mm range.

Field-swappable cable or sensor without rewiring

Why not: This is the fixed 2m PVC cable-type version, not a plug-in connector variant.

Use instead: The M8/M12 capacitive proximity switch with connector series.

Safety-related guarding or interlocks

Why not: No safety rating is claimed for this product.

Use instead: A dedicated safety switch or safety light curtain (DX series).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the sensing distance of the M8 capacitive proximity switch?
1mm for the flush-mount version (part numbers ending in "01"), and 2mm for the non-flush "T" version (part numbers ending in "02T").
Can this sensor detect non-metallic materials?
Yes. It works on the capacitive sensing principle, which responds to a wide range of materials including liquids, powders, granules, wood, glass, and plastics — not just metal.
What is the difference between flush and non-flush mounting on this sensor?
The flush-mount version can be installed level with a surrounding metal surface and has a 1mm sensing distance; the non-flush version (marked with a "T" suffix) must have clearance around the sensing face and offers a longer 2mm sensing distance.
What output types are available?
Both NPN and PNP transistor outputs are available, each in normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) switching logic, for a total of eight part number variants.
What is the operating voltage and wiring configuration?
