Overview

JNS18 and JNK18 are diffuse-reflective (proximity-mode) photoelectric sensors housed in a standard M18 cylindrical barrel. JNS18 is the short-range, plastic-housing model (M18×68 mm) covering 10/30/50 cm; JNK18 is the long-range model (M18×73 mm) covering 30 cm/50 cm/1 m/3 m, with built-in output overload protection.

They are intended for machine builders, panel integrators, and OEMs who need to detect the presence of an object — carton, pallet, sheet, part, or bulk material — from one side, without installing a reflector or a separate receiver on the other side of the detection path. Together the two series offer seven sensing-range options and a choice of NPN/PNP, normally-open/normally-closed output on every model.

How to Select

  1. Need 10 cm, 30 cm, or 50 cm near/mid-range detection: choose the JNS18 series (economy plastic housing).
  2. Need 30 cm, 50 cm, 1 m, or 3 m mid/long-range detection, or need output overload protection: choose the JNK18 series.
  3. Both 30 cm and 50 cm are available in both series — choose JNS18 if budget is the priority, or JNK18 if overload protection or a longer housing is needed.
  4. If your PLC input is sinking (NPN), choose a DN1 (single N.O.) or DN2 model; if sourcing (PNP), choose a DP1 (single N.O.) or DP2 model.
  5. The DN2/DP2 definition differs between series: on JNS18, DN2/DP2 are single normally-closed outputs; on JNK18, DN2/DP2 output normally-open and normally-closed simultaneously. Confirm this before ordering or wiring.
  6. Need only a single normally-open signal (output when object present): choose a '1' suffix model (DN1/DP1).

When NOT to specify the JNS18 — and what to use instead

Dark, matte, or low-reflectivity targets, especially near the top of the JNK18's 3 m range

Why not: All JNS18/JNK18 models are diffuse-reflective, sensing light reflected from the target itself, so a low-reflectivity target will trigger at a shorter distance than the rated 10cm-3m figures.

Use instead: a through-beam pair for long range that doesn't depend on target reflectivity

Detection distance beyond 3 m

Why not: The longest rated range in the line-up is the JNK18-300D at 3 m; no model in this series exceeds that.

Use instead: a through-beam pair rated for longer range (up to 15 m)

The target is a clear film or transparent sheet

Why not: Diffuse-reflective sensing depends on light reflected back from the target surface, which a transparent target may not return reliably.

Use instead: a through-beam pair for color/transparency-independent detection

Personnel guarding or a safety interlock
