Overview
PZ-LX101 is a single-output NPN contrast sensor, also known as a color mark or registration sensor, designed to detect a printed mark against its background by contrast. It is built for OEMs and machine builders integrating registration and positioning control into packaging, labeling, printing, and web-converting equipment, wherever a mark must be located reliably as material moves past the sensor.
The sensor offers two operating modes, MARK mode and C/C1 mode, each with its own rated response time, and a sensing range of 8-25 mm with a 17 mm depth-of-field window that gives installers tolerance for normal mounting-distance variation. A field-selectable Light-ON/Dark-ON output lets the same unit detect a dark mark on a light background or a light mark on a dark background without rewiring or reprogramming the PLC, and it runs on a 12-24 VDC supply compatible with common machine control voltages.
Features & Benefits
Dual Operating Modes
MARK mode and C/C1 mode give machine builders two selectable working modes on one sensor, each with its own rated response time, so a single part can be configured for different detection tasks.
Selectable Light-ON / Dark-ON Output
A switch lets the same sensor output on either a light mark on a dark background or a dark mark on a light background, so you don't need to rewire or change PLC logic when the print/material combination changes.
8-25 mm Sensing Range with Mounting Tolerance
A 17 mm depth-of-field window gives installers room to absorb normal mounting-distance variation without re-tuning the sensor for every line change.
Single NPN Output for Simple Integration
One NPN output keeps wiring and PLC interfacing straightforward for OEMs standardizing on NPN I/O.
12-24 VDC Supply
Matches the supply rails already used on most packaging and labeling machine control panels, simplifying power integration.

How to Select
- Confirm the target mounting distance falls within the 8-25 mm sensing range before specifying PZ-LX101.
- PZ-LX101 provides a single NPN output with a Light-ON/Dark-ON switch; contact us to confirm availability of a PNP or NO/NC-switchable version if your project requires one.
- Choose MARK mode for standard color-mark (contrast) detection; confirm the intended use case for C/C1 mode with us before specifying.
- Verify that your control voltage falls within the 12-24 VDC supply range.
- MARK mode and C/C1 mode have different rated response times; request confirmed response-time figures from us before specifying for high-speed lines.
📘 Need the full method? NPN vs PNP Sensor Outputs Explained
When NOT to specify the PZ-LX101 — and what to use instead
The PLC uses PNP (sourcing) inputs, or the line needs a single sensor switchable between NPN and PNP output.
Why not: PZ-LX101's confirmed datasheet lists NPN output only; a PNP or NO/NC-switchable version has not been confirmed for this model.
Use instead: The switchable JNS-W70/W500, which offers NPN/PNP switchable output on one unit, or a PNP-output color-mark sensor such as FS-S72P if its 18-28mm range fits the application.
The task is classifying or verifying an actual color among multiple variants, not detecting a printed mark by contrast.
Why not: PZ-LX101's MARK and C/C1 modes are built for mark/registration (contrast) detection, not multi-color discrimination.
Use instead: The CZ-V21 RGB color sensor for true color classification.
The sensor-to-material mounting distance is greater than 25mm, or the installation needs a longer standoff.
Why not: PZ-LX101's sensing range is 8-25mm, a short, close-mount design.
Use instead: The long-range JNS-W70/W500 for a large sensor-to-web gap.
Specifications we do not publish yet
We only publish a figure once we are confident it is true. The items below are still being validated through further testing and real-world customer feedback, so for now we would rather leave them open than guess. If one of them matters to your design, ask us for the latest validated status.
- IP (ingress protection) rating has not been confirmed from current source material
- Response time for MARK mode and for C/C1 mode is not confirmed as a final figure — available source material shows conflicting units (printed as μm, suspected to mean μs) and is not adopted until verified
- Availability of a PNP or NO/NC-switchable variant has not been confirmed
- Housing dimensions are not stated
- Operating temperature range is not stated
- Certification standards are not named; only stated as available on request
- Cable length and connector type are not stated
- Whether PZ-LX101 is the same product as a similarly named "JNS-LX101" referenced elsewhere (different sensing distance and output specification) has not been confirmed
