Overview

JNS-W70 and JNS-W500 are photoelectric color/contrast mark sensors using a white LED emitter. JNS-W70 detects at 30-70mm and JNS-W500 detects at 50-500mm, both far beyond the typical few-millimeter to few-tens-of-millimeter working distance of conventional color mark sensors. They are built for machine builders and packaging/converting line integrators who need to detect a printed mark, label edge, or contrast boundary but cannot, or prefer not to, mount the sensor directly against the material.

The extended range lets the sensor be positioned away from heat sealing bars, splash or spray zones, web-change areas, or behind a machine-frame or guard opening. Both models share the same electrical and output specification: a white LED light source, switchable NPN/PNP open-collector output with selectable N.O./N.C. logic, IO-Link communication, five response speed settings, four timer modes, 10-30VDC supply, and an IP65-rated 128g housing.

Features & Benefits

Detection Range Up to 500mm

JNS-W500 detects at 50-500mm and JNS-W70 at 30-70mm, letting the sensor be positioned well clear of the material surface, or behind a machine-frame opening, on installations where close-mounted contrast sensors cannot be used.

White LED Emitter for a Wide Range of Mark/Background Colors

A white LED covers the full visible spectrum, so the sensor is not limited to one target color the way a single-color LED emitter is, letting it handle a wider range of mark and background color combinations.

Switchable NPN/PNP Output Plus Selectable N.O./N.C.

One sensor covers open-collector NPN or PNP output (≤30V, ≤100mA, residual voltage ≤2V), each switchable to N.O. or N.C. logic, so one part number fits different PLC input types.

IO-Link Communication Interface

The sensor supports IO-Link, enabling parameter access and communication with IO-Link-capable PLC/master systems.

External Input for Teach or Emitter-Off

The external input can be configured as a teach/tuning input or as an emitter-stop input, supporting remote parameter setting and emission control.

Five Response Speeds and Four Timer Modes

Response time is selectable across 200μs / 1ms / 10ms / 100ms / 500ms, and a built-in timer function offers OFF / on-delay / off-delay / one-shot modes, letting the output pulse be shaped inside the sensor rather than requiring external timing hardware.

Fine Light Spot for Small-Mark Resolution

JNS-W70 produces a light spot of approximately 1.6 x 2.9mm at 50mm, sized for detecting small marks at close-to-mid range; JNS-W500's spot ranges from φ3.5mm at 100mm to φ20mm at 500mm across its longer working range.

IP65-Rated Housing at 128g

The sensor housing is rated IP65 (dust-tight, protected against water jets) and weighs 128g, suitable for industrial environments and lightweight enough for mounting on moving mechanisms.

Applications

Bag-Making and Form-Fill-Seal Machines With Fluctuating Web PositionLong detection range (up to 500mm) tolerates larger variation in material distance without repositioning the sensor.
Mounting Away From Heat-Sealing Bars or Hot ZonesThe sensor can sit at a distance from heat sources rather than being mounted directly next to them.
Mounting Away From Spray or Splash ZonesLong working distance allows the sensor body to be kept clear of wet or contaminating zones.
Detecting Through a Machine-Frame or Guard OpeningExtended range permits sensing through an existing gap in machine structure rather than requiring a close-mount bracket inside the frame.
Print/Registration Mark Detection on Packaging and Printing LinesWhite LED emitter and adjustable response/timer settings suit reading print registration marks at line speed.
Mixed NPN/PNP PLC EnvironmentsThe switchable NPN/PNP and N.O./N.C. output lets one part number serve installations with different PLC input conventions.
Lines Using IO-Link InfrastructureIO-Link communication interface allows the sensor to connect into an IO-Link-enabled control system.
JNS-W70 for Close-to-Mid Range, Small/Fine Mark Detection30-70mm range with a ~1.6x2.9mm spot at 50mm suits smaller marks at shorter distances.
JNS-W500 for Long-Range, Larger-Area Mark Detection50-500mm range with spot growing from φ3.5mm to φ20mm suits applications needing greater standoff distance.

Models & Ordering Information

JNS-W Long-Range Color Mark Sensor

JNS-W70JNS-W500
JNS-W70: detection range 30-70mm, spot approx. 1.6x2.9mm @50mm. JNS-W500: detection range 50-500mm, spot φ3.5mm @100mm to φ20mm @500mm. Both share identical output/electrical specification.

How to Select

  1. Choose JNS-W70 when the mounting distance is 30-70mm and a finer light spot is needed to resolve small marks.
  2. Choose JNS-W500 when the mounting distance is 50-500mm or greater installation freedom/standoff is required.
  3. For small marks needing fine resolution, JNS-W70's ~1.6x2.9mm spot at 50mm is the better fit; for larger marks or longer standoff, JNS-W500's φ3.5mm-φ20mm spot range suits the longer distance.
  4. Both models support NPN/PNP open-collector switching and N.O./N.C. switching on the same unit, so PLC input type (NPN commonly used in Japan, PNP commonly used in Europe/US) can be set on site without ordering a different model.
  5. If the installation needs to connect to an IO-Link master for remote parameter setting, both models support IO-Link.
  6. For high-speed lines or narrow marks, select a shorter response setting (200μs/1ms); for unstable signals or where a more stable reading is needed, select a longer setting (100ms/500ms), and pair with the timer function (OFF/on-delay/off-delay/one-shot) to shape the output.
  7. Both models share the same 10-30VDC supply, IP65 protection rating, and 128g weight, so power and environmental requirements do not differ between the two models.

When NOT to specify the JNS-W70 — and what to use instead

The task is classifying or verifying an actual color among several variants, not detecting a mark/contrast boundary.

Why not: JNS-W70/W500 is a color/contrast mark sensor that switches output on a detected mark or contrast boundary; no color-discrimination count (number of colors distinguishable) is documented for it, unlike DAIDISIKE's dedicated color sensors.

Use instead: The CZ-V21 RGB color sensor for true color classification.

The mark is extremely small and needs a sub-millimeter spot at very close range to resolve reliably.

Why not: Even the finer JNS-W70 head has a spot of approx. 1.6 x 2.9mm at 50mm, and its minimum detection range is 30mm; it is not built as a fine, close-mount design.

Use instead: A fiber-optic color-mark sensor for tiny marks.

The sensor must be mounted very close to the material, within a few millimeters to 25mm, with no room for standoff distance.

Why not: JNS-W70's minimum detection range is 30mm and JNS-W500's minimum is 50mm; neither model is rated below 30mm.

Use instead: The FS-S72 (18-28mm) or PZ-LX101 (8-25mm) for close-mount installations.

The installation is in a hazardous or explosive atmosphere requiring explosion-proof or ATEX-rated equipment.

Why not: JNS-W70/W500 is rated IP65 (dust-tight, protected against water jets) only; no explosion-proof or hazardous-area rating is documented.

Use instead: Contact DAIDISIKE to confirm a certified hazardous-area alternative before specifying for such environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum detection distance of the JNS-W series color mark sensors?
JNS-W500 detects at 50-500mm, and JNS-W70 detects at 30-70mm. Both exceed the typical working distance of conventional color mark sensors, which is commonly limited to tens of millimeters.
Can the same sensor be switched between NPN and PNP output?
Yes. Both JNS-W70 and JNS-W500 provide switchable NPN/PNP open-collector output (≤30V, ≤100mA, residual voltage ≤2V), plus selectable N.O./N.C. logic, on the same unit.
Does the JNS-W series support IO-Link?
Yes, both models include an IO-Link communication interface in addition to the discrete NPN/PNP output.
What light source does the JNS-W series use, and why does that matter?
Both models use a white LED emitter, which covers the full visible spectrum rather than a single wavelength, allowing detection of a wider range of mark and background color combinations than a single-color LED source.
What is the difference between JNS-W70 and JNS-W500?
JNS-W70 has a 30-70mm detection range with a finer light spot (approx. 1.6 x 2.9mm at 50mm), suited to close-to-mid range and smaller marks. JNS-W500 has a longer 50-500mm detection range with a light spot from φ3.5mm at 100mm to φ20mm at 500mm, suited to installations needing greater standoff distance.
