Overview

The FS-S72 is a photoelectric contrast/color mark sensor that detects a printed registration mark (eyemark) on packaging film, labels or printed webs by sensing the contrast between the mark and its background, then switches its output ON accordingly. It is designed for machine builders and end users running packaging machines, labeling machines, bag-making machines and converting/printing lines who need a compact switching sensor to trigger cutting, sealing or bag-forming actions in sync with a moving material.

It operates on a 24VDC supply with an open-collector switching output, over an 18-28mm sensing range, with a response time of 200 microseconds or less. The series is available as FS-S72 (NPN open-collector) or FS-S72P (PNP open-collector), and each unit supports two operating modes: mark (contrast) detection mode, which switches ON when a printed mark is detected, and color mode, which switches ON when the detected color matches a taught reference color.

Features & Benefits

Sub-200μs response for high-speed registration control

Ultra-fast 200μs (or less) response time supports accurate registration mark detection on high-speed packaging and printing lines, reducing positional lag between mark detection and the machine's cutting/sealing action at high web speeds.

NPN and PNP versions in one series

Available as FS-S72 (NPN open-collector) and FS-S72P (PNP open-collector), so the sensor can be wired directly into sinking-input PLCs (common in Japanese-style systems) or sourcing-input PLCs (common in European/US-style systems) without an extra signal converter.

Two operating modes in one sensor: mark detection and color match

The output switches ON either when a contrasting mark is detected (mark/contrast mode) or when the sensed color matches a taught reference color (color mode), letting one sensor cover both position detection and a basic color-consistency check.

18-28mm sensing range

The sensor operates over an 18-28mm sensing distance rather than a single fixed point, giving installers a working window to position the sensor within rather than requiring precise, single-point distance setting.

24VDC standard supply, open-collector switching output

Runs on a standard industrial 24VDC supply with an open-collector switching output, matching the typical control-cabinet voltage and input style used on packaging and converting machinery.

Applications

Registration mark detection on packaging filmDetects the printed registration mark on continuously fed packaging film so the machine can time its cutting or sealing to the correct print position, using the sensor's mark/contrast detection mode and sub-200μs response.
Bag-making machine positioningProvides the position trigger signal used to synchronize bag-forming, cutting and sealing steps with the printed mark on the film, using mark detection mode and 24VDC open-collector output for direct PLC input wiring.
Labeling machine label-gap / print-mark detectionDetects the mark printed near a label gap to trigger label dispensing at the correct position, using the sensor's contrast-based mark detection.
Print registration in converting/printing linesDetects color-register marks used to align print stations or trigger slitting/cutting positions on converting lines, using mark detection mode and the 18-28mm sensing range.
Simple color-consistency verification in color modeSwitches ON only when the detected color matches a taught reference color, allowing a basic pass/fail color check on packaging material or components with the same sensor used for positioning.
Sensor selection for mixed-brand PLC linesBecause both NPN (FS-S72) and PNP (FS-S72P) outputs are available in the same series, machine builders supplying lines with different PLC brands can standardize on one sensor family instead of stocking separate interface hardware.

Models & Ordering Information

FS-S72 series (by output type)

FS-S72FS-S72P
FS-S72 = NPN open-collector output; FS-S72P = PNP open-collector output. Both share the same 18-28mm sensing range, sub-200μs response time and 24VDC supply; only the output transistor type differs.

How to Select

  1. Choose by output type: if the PLC uses NPN (sinking) inputs, select FS-S72; if the PLC uses PNP (sourcing) inputs, select FS-S72P.
  2. Confirm on-site PLC input card specification before selecting NPN or PNP, since wiring convention is not fixed to a single PLC brand.
  3. Choose the operating mode on site: use mark (contrast) mode for pure position/registration detection, or color mode when a color-consistency check is also needed; both modes run on the same hardware with no separate model required.
  4. Confirm that the installation distance from the sensor to the detection surface (film, label or printed web) falls within the 18-28mm sensing range.
  5. Confirm the control system can supply the required 24VDC operating voltage.

When NOT to specify the FS-S72 — and what to use instead

The application needs to classify or verify a target's actual color among several possible variants, not just check it against one taught reference.

Why not: FS-S72's color mode only switches ON when the detected color matches a single taught reference color; it is not documented to discriminate among multiple colors the way a dedicated color sensor does.

Use instead: The CZ-V21 RGB color sensor (or CZ-V1) for true multi-color classification and discrimination.

The sensor must be mounted well beyond the material, for example clear of a heat-sealing bar, spray zone, or machine-frame opening.

Why not: FS-S72's sensing distance is fixed at 18-28mm, a short, close-mount design.

Use instead: The long-range JNS-W70/W500 for a large sensor-to-web gap.

The line runs mixed NPN and PNP PLC hardware and a single sensor part number needs to serve both without separately stocking two output variants.

Why not: FS-S72's NPN and PNP outputs are two separate models (FS-S72 vs. FS-S72P) selected at order time, not switchable on one unit.

Use instead: The JNS-W70/W500, which offers switchable NPN/PNP open-collector output on a single unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the response time of the FS-S72 color mark sensor?
The FS-S72 has a response time of 200 microseconds (μs) or less.
What is the sensing (detection) distance of the FS-S72?
The FS-S72 has a sensing distance of 18-28mm.
What operating voltage does the FS-S72 require?

FS-S72 has an NPN open-collector output, while FS-S72P has a PNP open-collector output. Both share the same sensing distance, response time and operating voltage; only the output transistor type differs, so customers select based on their PLC's input type (sinking vs sourcing).
Does the FS-S72 only detect marks, or can it also check color?
The FS-S72 has two operating modes: a mark (contrast) detection mode that switches ON when a printed registration mark is detected, and a color mode that switches ON when the detected color matches a taught reference color.
Is the FS-S72 suitable for high-speed packaging lines?
Its sub-200μs response time is designed to support registration mark detection on high-speed packaging and printing lines. Actual maximum line speed depends on the specific machine's mechanical and control system design and is not independently specified here.
What is the IP (ingress protection) rating of the FS-S72?
This information is not yet confirmed in the current product documentation. Please contact us to request the latest datasheet.
What is the physical size and detection accuracy of the FS-S72?
